Please join us for the 3rd event in our Museum Speaker Series. This will be an evening all about the Bay Area Ridge Trail, a planned 550-mile trail on the spectacular ridge lines circling San Francisco Bay, which is nearly two thirds completed. When complete, it will connect more than 75 parks and open-space areas for hikers, mountain bicyclists, and equestrians.

In August 2010, mountain bikers Austin McInerny and Yuri Hauswald joined photographer Scott Markewitz to make the first-ever circumnavigation of the Ridge Trail by bicycle.

Please join us for the 2nd edition of our Museum Speaker Series presentations. This will be a fun evening with Carl Sanders, Watershed Maintenance Supervisor of Marin Municipal Water District, presenting a beautifully photographed and scored, multimedia slide show of his recent mountain bike tour of the Sierra Nevada.

It was a mountain bike tour like no other. Carl Sanders attempted to pioneer a new and continuous adventure-cycling route across mixed terrain, for the full north-south length of the Sierra.

He traveled solo and unsupported, passing through six National Forests and three National Parks. He crossed twelve major river drainages and visited two historic fire lookouts along the way.
Adventure cycling is an emerging outdoor sport. This presentation on the Sierra Quest Tour showcases this exciting new way to explore our world by bicycle.

An Evening with Carlton Reid - Author of "Roads Were Not Built For Cars" - Museum Speaker Series #1

Marin Museum of Bicycling
1966 Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
Fairfax, CA 94930

Join us for an evening of lively discussion about the early days of bicycling and automobiles with the book's author and researcher, Mr. Carlton Reid.
Making a stop in Fairfax on his North American book tour, all proceeds will benefit the Marin Museum of Bicycling. Bring your curiosity and your questions, and join us for this special night!
FOR RESERVED SEATING, CLICK ON *** Register *** BELOW. Tickets will also be available at the door the evening of the event. Seating is limited to the first 80 people.

Reid’s book reveals the pivotal and largely unrecognized role that bicyclists played in the development of modern roadways, essentially paving the way for cars. The League of American Wheelmen “Good Roads” campaign beginning in the 1880s led to the eventual foundation of the Federal Highways Administration. In this “golden age,” bicycling’s rapid rise put this vehicle at the cutting edge of technology.

By the dawn of the 20th century the bicycle brain trust shifted largely to automotive pursuits and the bicycle star fell rapidly. In America, automotive historians of the 1920s wrote the lowly bicycle right out of history.

A little bit from the book:
"The coming of the railways in the 1830's killed off the stage-coach trade; almost all rural roads reverted to low-level local use. Cyclists were the first group in a generation to use roads and were the first to push for high-quality leadership for roads. They were also the first promoters of motoring; the first motoring journalists had first been cycling journalists; and there was a transfer of technology from cycling to motoring without which cars as we know them wouldn't exist! 64 car marques, including Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC, had bicycling beginnings."

About Carlton Reid:
Mr. Reid has been a journalist for 28 years. His work has appeared in National Geographic Traveler and The Guardian and many other magazines and newspapers. He is the executive editor of BikeBiz.com, a monthly trade magazine which he founded (and sold to Intent Media in 2006). He is also commissioner for the Bicycle Association and the BA’s Bike Hub levy fund. In 1997 he was the co-owner and editor/publisher of On Your Bike magazine, a magazine for family and “born-again” cyclists, which was sold to EMAP of Peterborough in December 1999. (EMAP turned the general interest, non-Lycra magazine into a mountain bike magazine – it soon folded, and not in a good way.) His previous books include Adventure Mountain Biking (Crowood Press, 1990); Complete Book of Cycling (contributor, Hamlyn 1997); I-Spy Bicycles (Michelin 1998); Discover Israel (Berlitz 1998); Lebanon: A Travel Guide (Kindlife 1995); Classic Mountain Bike Routes of the World (contributor, Quarto Publishing, 2000) and Bike to Work Book (November 2008). He was co-manager of the first ever British mountain bike team. This team competed in the World Championships in Villard de Lans, France, in 1987.
